A Guide to Inkjet Cartridge Refills
![]() |
Inkjet printers are very popular for today's homes and offices. These printers work by spraying drops of ink onto the paper. These drops of ink are microscopic in size and dry almost instantly. Most inkjet printers can print in both black and full color. However, printing can get expensive if you do a lot of it. Inkjet cartridge refills are one way you can save money on the cost of your printer ink.
Most every type of cartridge can be refilled. Some cartridges, like those made by Epson, contain a smart chip which designates whether the cartridge is empty or full. For these types of cartridges, a tool called a resetter is needed to reset the chip so that it can be refilled and used again. After the chip is reset, the printer will recognize that the cartridge is 'new' and ready for use. Whether or not you'll need to go through the resetting process depends on the type of cartridge you are using.
You'll need to make sure you choose an ink refill kit made for the type of printer that you have. There are refill kits for brand names like Brother, Epson, HP, Lexmark, and Canon. If you're refilling a black ink cartridge, the process is fairly simple and requires you only fill up one tank. For a color cartridge, you'll be filling three separate tanks with red, yellow and blue ink. In the average ink refill kit, you'll receive the ink, a syringe, and detailed instructions for use. The first few times you go through the refilling process, you will want to protect your work surface from spills and stains by putting an old sheet or towel down. After you get the hang of things, the procedure will be less messy!
Both name brand and generic compatible ink cartridges can be refilled. The average inkjet cartridge can be refilled and used anywhere between two and eight times depending on who you ask. For best results, try to stay somewhere in the range of four or five refills per cartridge. If you don't want to handle the inkjet cartridge refills on your own, you have another option. Remanufactured inkjet cartridges are ones that have been used, refilled and are offered at a discount price.
